ACTIVITY
Becoming a Master Dyer
Like the Phoenicians, you can create a range of purplish hues by varying the dye ingredients, and dyeing and soaking times. Try using blueberries instead of blackberries, or mix the two. Try different amounts of water or berries. Add 1 to 3 teaspoons (5 to 15 ml) of white vinegar to change the color. You can also cook the dye longer or shorter amounts of time. For stronger colors, let the socks cool in the dye overnight. (Strain out the berries first, or they will leave splotches.)
Different fabrics produce different colors from the same dye. You’ll get the brightest results with wool. Cotton and synthetic fibers will give paler colors, and polyester may not dye at all. Keep records and experiment.
